FACE, Inc., the production company for WE Fest and 10.000 Lakes Festival, received a 2008 grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to fund the WE B Green Special Event Recycling program at the Soo Pass Ranch. The immediate goal of the WE B Green program is to decrease landfill waste through increased recycling efforts, combined with more emphasis on composting, and reusable products for vendors, audience and employees.
We are proud to announce that the WE B Green program surpassed the initial goal of recycling 20% of all waste materials in 2008, achieving a recycling rate of 24% for the WE Fest and 10.000 Lakes Festival combined. This represents an 18% increase over last year’s recapture rate.
The overall goal of reducing landfill waste was also achieved, with a 29% drop in the amount of trash taken to the Becker County Landfill during these events. Because of the WE B Green program, The WE Fest and 10.000 Lakes Festival generated 79 tons less trash, compared to 2007.
The long term goal of the WE B Green Special Event Recycling Program is to achieve a recycling rate of 50%, and to replicate these efforts at special events statewide. Toward that end, FACE Inc., with funding from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, is now developing a WE B Green instructional DVD, with companion handbook, that will be distributed free of charge to other special events. Material for the DVD was filmed at both events, focusing on advanced planning, building and operating campground recycling stations, as well as stage announcements and audience education. For additional information, or to request a WE B Green Special Event Recycling DVD and Handbook, please send your request to WE B Green, FACE Inc., P.O. You can't listen to great music in the great outdoors, if the outdoors aren't that great. We want future generations of WE Fest'ers to enjoy the same beautiful lakes, woods and prairies that make the Soo Pass Ranch special, so we are asking you to help us save the planet - one recyclable at a time.
Being green means you reduce the amount of packaging and items you bring to the festival. Pack reusable dishes, cups and silverware instead of plastic and styrofoam items. When purchasing items make sure they are in recyclable packaging. Recycle all aluminum, plastic, glass, metal, cardboard, paper and food waste you can.
WE B Green is an audience friendly recycling program aimed at reducing the amount of landfill waste generated by events at the Soo Pass Ranch, through increased recycling. It's that simple. Less Trash - Better Planet!
When you arrive at the campgrounds you will be given two plastic bags - a dark one for your trash and a clear one for your recycling. If everyone puts more stuff in the clear bag and less stuff in the dark bag - bingo: WE B Green!
Join our WE B Green Team:
Free camping permits, concert tickets, and WE B Green t-shirts in exchange for helping us pass out and collect recycling bags during and after the event. Team members will also roam the campgrounds helping people green up their campsites.
There will be 10 WE B Green volunteers in each campground. Volunteers will camp together at a specific location, work together, and share their enthusiasm for recycling with other team members, and the audience. Experience recycling at other events would be helpful. Priority will be given to people who can put together their own team of people totally committed to a green lifestyle. Must be at least 21. If you would like to volunteer, please e-mail your full name, address, phone number and email address to David Larson at david@arvig.net or for more information call 218-234-6253, and tell us why you want to be part of the WE B Green team. |
